【摘要】:Inpreparingthisglossarytheobjecthasbeentostandardizeandtoco-ordinatethetechnicaltermsincurrentuseinminingintheUnitedKingdom.Althoughthemajorityofthetermsarenecessarilyconcernedwithcoalmining,accounthasbeentakenofcertaintermsusedinotherformsofminingandofquarrying.Duringthelongperiodwhichhaselapsedsincethepublicationofthelastauthoritativeminingglossary,manynewtermshavecomeintouse.Theneedforthepresentglossaryhasarisenfromthewidelyvaryinginterpretationanduseofsuchnewterms,andtheprevalentuseofmorethanonesynonym,somepurelylocalinorigin,toindicatespecificmeanings.Theglossarywillinitiallybeissuedinanumberofsections,accordingtosubjectmatter,andwillincludetermsrelevanttothefollowingfieldsofmining:PlanningandSurveying;Ventilation;BoringandExploration;Drainage;Geology;DrillingandBlasting;ElectricalEngineeringandLighting;WinningandWorking;Transport;ShaftsandAssociatedEquipment;StrataControl.Thefollowingfactorshavegovernedtheselectionanddefinitionofterms:(1)Wheretwoormoretermsareinusethetermwhichisfavouredisgivenfirstandprintedinheavytype.Itishopedthatsuchpreferredtermswillgraduallydisplacethenon-preferredterms.Wheretheuseofanytermisconsideredtobeundesirableitismarked'deprecated'.(2)Takingabroadviewofthevarioussectionsofthisglossary,onlytermswhichhaveaspecificmeaninginmininghavebeenincludedand,generally,whereatechnicaltermhasanacceptedmeaninginotherfieldsofengineeringithasbeenomitted;thefewexceptionsaretermswhichareofparticularandfundamentalimportanceinmining.(3)Purelylocaltermsarenotdefined,butthoseofsufficientimportanceareincludedasnon-preferredtermsalongsidethepreferredsynonyms.(4)Obsoletetermsareexcluded.note:*'Aglossaryoftheminingandmineralindustry'byA.H.Fay,U.S.BureauofMines,Washington,1920.
